3-Senate Debates New Gun Control Legislation Amid Rising Violence - Jessica 244484
The U.S. Senate is discussing fresh, stricter gun control laws in response to a recent rise in gun-related violence, hence igniting a contentious debate among legislators.
Aiming to apply universal background checks and a required waiting time for all gun transactions, a bipartisan group of senators presented a suggested law. Strong responses have been generated by the proposed law, especially among supporters of guns who believe it violates Second Amendment rights. Supporters counter that tougher laws are required to slow down the national increase in gun violence, citing previous mass shootings that left scores dead or wounded.
Declared to be an overreach of government power, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has promised to resist the measure. Concurrent with this, gun control advocacy organizations—including Moms Demand Action—have started campaigns to promote the measure, therefore guiding Congress towards public safety.
